Lower School Overview— Kindergarten - Grade 5
The first time you walk through our school it makes you feel happy. The students and faculty are cheerful, the landscaping is beautifully done, and it is a safe and nurturing place to be. Once you step beyond the classroom door you will find students engaged in hands-on activities and teachers who are attentive to the needs of the students. Quite often, nobody will be there because they are out on a field trip, working in the garden, doing PE, or otherwise involved in authentic learning opportunities that bring academics into the real world.
The lower school proceeds with developmentally appropriate activities and learning experiences. The small class sizes, with an 18 to 1 student/teacher ratio, make for lots of individual attention and awareness of the needs of each student. The faculty works together to assure a solid progression from grade to grade in the core subjects of Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. This is augmented with studies in Hawaiian culture, art, music, technology, Japanese studies, PE, and in 4th and 5th grade, Japanese and Spanish language.
Students also look forward to the many events and celebrations that are integrated into the learning experience and often explore the varied cultural influences at play in Hawaii. These include our Science Fair, May Day Celebration, Winter and Spring Shows, Girls' Day, Boys' Day, Pet Day, Grandparents' Day, Field Day, performances by Kenny Endo's Taiko Drumming Ensemble, The Honolulu Theatre for Youth, among a host of other happenings. Does this sound like an exciting place to go to school? Well it is! Please explore what we have to offer and come by for a visit.
